A conversation with leaders of JATAF, Kimuni Kayaba Raymond and Nyembo Kayaba Thomas, recorded 27. 6. 1985 in Lubumbashi.

Notes for June 27, 1985
Ca. 10:30. B. Thomas arrives together with his father, B. Kimuni Kayaba Raymond. They greet me with yambo yetu [the Jamaa greeting]...Baba Raymond (b. 1928) does not look his age.He is an intense person, but frank. His first, or rather second, question is: habari ya mama? [how is your wife?] (Which now reminds me of several similar situations; habari ya mama simply is part of a greeting among Jamaa people.)

17. Furthermore, mm [pause] Life always means development. The destiny of a person is that you begin with childhood, you grow up, and so on. Now, in the teachings of the Jamaa, do you see development? Right now you who belong to JATAF [clears his throat], are going to teach just the thoughts of Baba Placide. K: We see that (the Jamaa) develops.

K: Well, what we see is that those who get initiated (lit. born) still follow the teachings.

K: Alright. Those were people who had been Christians (but) now they woke up. Now they joined (the Jamaa), they really tried to live (in the spirit of) Christianity. Thus they became brothers together with others who no longer went to church. That gave us hope that the teaching will make progress. Also, we can follow the counsel of those who were taught by Baba Placide himself.[46] They give us guidance which we follow and even our children will do that.
F: Mm.
N: Besides, in the past baba and mama were responsible for progress, nowadays progress shows when it affects the life of every household as a whole.
F: Mm.
N: Including all the children.
F: Everyone.
N: All of them live with trust in the Jamaa.
F: Mm.
N: In the past all this concerned baba and mama, not their children. Now, when I think about it I tell myself that cannot continue with this. Instead of sharing the thoughts only among two people, they now take hold of the entire house.

K: The ones we keep hearing of. I don't understand this, did they learn (the teachings) separately, in different places?
F: No. How shall I say? [pause] I asked many people (about that) but the answer would be – I'm going to give you an example.

F: It was at Baba Munjanji's, Munjanji Laurent.
K: Laurent, I see.
F: He was talking  (and I said to him) I have heard that you were seven babas.
N: Mm.
F: In those days, mm? And he said yes, there were seven of us. But his mama who happened to be elsewhere in the house called out: (That's a) lie.

F: There were many of us.
K: Yes.
N: I see.
F: So, even in the beginning, even in the beginning there were maybe twenty...
N: Mm.
F: ... twenty-five, as you can take it from the list...
N: ... (you get) when you ask.
F: But then this legend of the seven fathers came up, you understand?

F: Also, every baba had his own list of the seven fathers that was not the same (as that of others).
K: I see.

F: In other words, seven fathers is just a figure of speech, meaning those who were there at the beginning.
N: At the beginning.

F: Whether there were seven, or six, or eight, or twenty-five, we don't know.

F: This is something I realized long ago, in '66, when I started (research) with Father Bertin.

N: The information I had was on a list of twenty-four.

[1] JATAF was the acronym I had noted down and am going to use. In documents it also appears as J.T.AF. which in this conversation  Kimuni pronounces jetaf. The terminology of offices in JATAF is often combined with that of administrative units under the Mobutu regime.
[2] I said majibu, answers, but meant mauulizo, questions.
[3] Kimuni says kizungu, lit. the world of the Europeans.
[4] This is how I heard the names, one of which sounded Belgian to me; they will be corrected later.
[5] This refers to a phase during initiation when the two couples, initiated and candidates, have an encounter by exchanging their innermost thoughts and feelings.
[6] Probably the name pronounced here as Diagre and variants was "De Ja(e)ger" but I was unable to trace a missionary by the name of Joseph De Ja(e)ger. A De Jaeger, first name Ghislain, a White Father, was a parish priest at Kabalo.
[7] Though it sounds awkward in English I decided to translate bababa as "babas." The expression occurs repeatedly in this and the other conversation with leaders of JATAF. Though it may be short for "members of the Jamaa" or the standard bababa na bamama, fathers and mothers, a closer analysis of occurrences may reveal a male bias in JATAF discourse.
[8] Kimuni uses two terms for what I translate as "grade:" (ma)wazo, thought(s), and njia, way.
[9] “That” is an elliptic reference to ’73, the year of the decisive confrontation between the Jamaa and a Bishops’ Conference in Lubumbashi.
[10] What Kimuni says is not clear to me except that he wanted to explain why he had to wait for ten years to be initiated by Kaumba Valentin in Lubmbashi; see note 5 above.

Another one, not only but especially here, is a somewhat chaotic turn-taking with Kimuni (much interrupting and overlapping). Here this is probably due to their eagerness to set me right on "proselytism." Accordingly, the translation only gives the gist of what I hear and understand.
[28] In translating njia I usually opt for "grade," the literal meaning the terms discussed here have in common.
